Speak Rwanda

52. Speak Rwanda by Julian R. Pierce (Fiction) 292 p.

World Lit Challenge: Rwanda

Set during the 1994 genocide, there are a lot of sad and horrifying things in this book, but also a lot of hope for the future. Pierce does a nice job of showing how ordinary people cope with extraordinary events, and balances his novel with the perspectives of ordinary Hutus and Tutsis, as well as génocidaires and RPF soldiers. Speak Rwanda is narrated from the points of view of ten Rwandans, from April 6, 1994, until some time the following year.

“Unputdownable” isn’t a word I ever expected to use to describe a novel about a genocide, but I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The subject was very difficult, but the book itself was very readable.
