Idlewild
Idlewild by Nick Sagan
A really wonderful science fiction novel which unfortunately fails to live up to its potential.
The idea was a very good one, especially in the details of life at the school. I liked the structure of the narrative, which kept me in suspense until all was revealed.
However. With all the time spent developing the school, and the mystery, I found the eventual revelation/confrontation to be distinctly anti-climactic. I also wasn’t at all satisfied with the conclusion. Of course, it was obvious that the book would have sequels, but I don’t feel any certainty that they will fulfill the promise that the first book didn’t. I’ll probably give them a miss.
Quite disappointing, since Neil Gaiman actually praised it.
